Transformation Stories

Christy Stillwell: From Victim to Advocate

Christy Stillwell became a trainee at Homeboy Industries in 2011 after 20 years as a victim of domestic violence.

She began working at the Homegirl Café washing dishes for 9 months, made sandwiches for the Diner at City Hall for 5 months, and joined the Catering Team for 18 months while training for her certificate in our Batterers’ Intervention Program.

Upon completion of her certificate she began facilitating and teaching our batterers’ 52 week program, where over 50 trainees cycle through each set of classes throughout the year.

On June 26, 2014 she received another certificate for completing the Domestic Violence Prevention And Intervention Education Program after forty hours of training, per the requirements set forth by the CA Office Of Emergency Services.

Christy will use her history, experience, and skills to advocate for victims of domestic violence and work toward eradication of inter familial violence. She has also been trained in Domestic Abuse Response Team operations enabling the participation in the Coordinated Community Response to Domestic Violence Programs with the LAPD.
